White on white, in flight…

Another image from the photo shoot of gulls in flight over Dow’s Lake, Ottawa.  I’m drawn to the beautiful form these birds display in mid-flight…

Feed the birds, tuppence a bag…

One of a series of images made whilst watching a father and his two young children feed the seagulls at Dow’s lake, Ottawa.  Note to self: it’s often much more efficient to actively create a photo opportunity (i.e. “by feeding the birds”) rather than to simply wait for it to happen…

HDR imagery of the Rideau River, Ottawa, Canada

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

As mentioned in an earlier post, the eye is capable of seeing far more tonal detail in shadows and in highlights than the camera can record on its sensor.  High dynamic range (HDR) imaging and tonal compression during post-processing allow the photographer to reintroduce some of the detail within a scene that is lost in capture.  This involves taking several photographs of the same subject but at different exposure levels and then blending them using specific algorithms.  The results can be quite beautiful and closer to what the eye perceives.  Below are a couple of recent examples of HDR images I created of views from along the Rideau River in Ottawa, Canada.  (You are invited to drop by my Flickr site for more samples of my HDR imagery…)
