More scenes from beneath the bridge…
Thursday, May 20th, 2010You may recall a previous post that highlighted an image I had made from under the St. Patrick Bridge in Ottawa. That photograph was created at night when various light sources competed for attention, creating wonderful colour casts throughout. (Yes, as a portrait photographer I normally want to eliminate casts, but in this case I find – borrowing from the software industry – they are a “feature” rather than a “bug”.) I continue to be drawn to that image. I find the beautiful hues of the night light soften what is otherwise a sterile construction of concrete and steel. But to me what really makes the image s the graffiti scene on the other side. That, together with the fabulous mix of light, transforms an industrial space into a cultural monument.
I decided to pursue this juxtaposition further when I came across a similar bridge spanning the Rideau River at Bronson Street in Ottawa. Again, I saw graffiti adorning the north wall of the bridge and decided to return at night to photograph it – below is the result.
